This group includes 96 different species divided into 19 genera. Most wrens live in the New World, which includes the Americas.

However, the Eurasian wren lives in the Old World. It can be found across Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. This specific bird is the one that gave the name "wren" to the whole group. Some other birds have the name too, but they are not true wrens.

These birds have a very interesting way of living. Many species are insectivorous, which means they mostly eat insects and spiders.

Some wrens also eat seeds, berries, or even small frogs and lizards. The Eurasian wren will even wade into shallow water for fish and tadpoles.

Wrens often look for food in dark, narrow cracks. This habit is why their family name means "cave-dweller." Some wrens even follow animals like badgers to find food. They eat the small things the badgers stir up from the ground.

People have told stories about wrens for a very long time.

An old fable says the wren became the king of birds. The story says the eagle thought he won a race to fly high. But the tiny wren had hidden in the eagle's feathers. When the eagle flew high, the wren popped out and won.

Because of this, some old books call the wren a "kinglet." In modern German, the name means "king of the fence." In Dutch, the name means "king of winter."

Wrens come in many different shapes and sizes.

The white-bellied wren is very small and weighs under 10 grams. On the other hand, the giant wren is much larger. It can weigh almost 100 grams. Most wrens have drab colors like brown, gray, or black.

Many species have stripes, called barring, on their wings or tails. They also have long, straight bills to help them find food. Most wrens have very loud and complex songs.

You might notice wrens in many different places.

Some live in dry, wooded areas, while others live in thick rainforests. Some species live in the forest canopy, which is the top layer of the trees.

Many wrens stay in the same place all year long. Other wrens in colder areas fly south during the winter. Some wrens even live near humans in houses. You can listen for their songs to find them in your yard.
