Sandgrouse are a unique family of sixteen bird species.

These birds live in open, treeless areas like plains and deserts. Most live in Africa and Asia, but some reach the Middle East and India. The black-bellied and pin-tailed sandgrouse even visit Spain and France. They are ground-dwelling birds that prefer dry environments. Their bodies are compact with sturdy builds. They have small heads and necks that look like a pigeon.

These birds are very important to the ecosystems where they live.

To survive in the heat, sandgrouse have special ways of working. Their feathers use cryptic plumage, which means they have sandy colors to hide. This helps them blend into the dusty ground. They have powerful wing muscles for fast, direct flight.

A very amazing thing happens when they need water. The feathers on a male's belly can absorb and hold liquid. They can carry 15 to 20 millilitres of water. The male flies many miles to bring this water to his chicks. This allows the family to live far away from watering holes.

Scientists have studied these birds to find where they belong. For a long time, people thought they were related to true grouse. Later, they were thought to be close to pigeons. This was because of how they drink water. They use a rapid movement to swallow water very quickly.

Now, they are placed in their own group called Pterocliformes. Recent DNA studies have helped researchers understand their true history. This shows how different birds can look similar even if they are not close relatives.

Sandgrouse live in many different places with specific habits.

The Syrrhaptes genus lives in the steppes of central Asia. Pallas's sandgrouse once flew as far as Ireland and the United Kingdom. In 1908, a huge group of them was seen in those areas. The Pterocles genus lives mostly in dry parts of Africa. Some species, like the Madagascar sandgrouse, live only on that island. Most sandgrouse stay in one place, but some move to lower lands in winter.

Watching sandgrouse can feel like watching a busy community. They are gregarious, which means they like to live and eat in large flocks.

These flocks can have up to 100 birds feeding together. They mostly eat seeds, but they also eat berries and green shoots. When they drink, they do it in a very organized way. Many hundreds of birds might arrive at a water hole at the same time. This helps them stay safe from predators while they drink. They work together to survive in the harsh, dry world.
