Grouse are a group of sturdy birds that live in many parts of the world.

They live in the Northern Hemisphere in places like pine forests, mountains, and wide prairies. Some live very far north in Greenland, while others live in Texas.

These birds are part of a family called Phasianidae. They are closely related to turkeys.

In fact, recent studies show that turkeys and grouse are very close relatives. Some scientists even think turkeys can be called grouse too.

Most grouse spend their time on the ground. They eat mostly plants like buds, leaves, and twigs.

For many adults, plants make up over 95% of their food. Some forest grouse even eat conifer needles that other animals will not touch. To digest this tough food, they have special body parts. They have large crops to hold food and gizzards to grind it up. They also eat grit to help break things down. Tiny bacteria in their long intestines help them get energy from the plants.

Many grouse species have a big difference in size between males and females. This is called sexual dimorphism.

Males are often much larger and heavier than females. In the western capercaillie, the male can be twice as heavy as the female. This happens because of sexual selection. This means females choose mates based on certain traits. Large males are often seen as more appealing. Some males gather in a group to show off. This special behavior is called lekking.

During mating season, males perform amazing displays to find a mate. They might show off bright colors on their necks or tails.

Some males make loud sounds or drum on the ground. They might even flutter their wings or rattle their tails. Females look for the best dancers or the brightest colors. After mating, the female builds a nest in a shallow dip on the ground. She lays between five and 12 pale yellow eggs. When the chicks hatch, they are covered in soft, downy feathers. They can fly quite soon, usually in less than two weeks.

Grouse are very important to the nature around them. They are a major food source for animals like foxes, lynx, and birds of prey.

Some grouse, like the ptarmigan, live in the cold tundra. These birds have feathers on their legs to help them walk on snow. Other species, like the prairie chicken, have faced hard times because their homes were lost. However, some birds like the ruffed grouse are doing well because people help manage their habitats. People have also studied grouse for a long time. Even folk dances in the Alps and North America copy the way grouse dance.
