This is called sexual dimorphism. Adult males are much larger than the females. Males have dark feathers that shine with many colors. They can show red, purple, green, copper, bronze, and gold. Males also have a "beard" on their chest. This is a tuft of hair-like filaments.

A man named Carl Linnaeus described them in 1758. He used the name Meleagris gallopavo. The word Meleagris comes from an Ancient Greek word for guineafowl. The second part of the name uses Latin words. It combines "gallus," meaning fowl, and "pavo," meaning peacock. This describes how beautiful the males can look. Conrad Gessner used the name in 1555.

Wild turkeys live in many different places.

They like forests with many types of trees. They also use fields, orchards, and marshes. There are six different subspecies of wild turkey. One is the Rio Grande wild turkey from Texas. Another is the Florida wild turkey. The Eastern wild turkey lives in Canada and the USA. They can even live in dry hillsides in California.

These birds spend their days looking for food.
