The ocellated turkey is a beautiful bird from Central America.

It lives mostly in the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. You can also find it in parts of Belize and Guatemala. This bird is a relative of the wild turkey found in North America. Some people once thought it belonged to its own group called Agriocharis. Now, scientists think the differences are too small to make a separate group. These birds are important to the lands where they live.

These turkeys have very special feathers. Both males and females have bronze and green feathers that shine. The males have blue heads with orange or red bumps. They also have a blue crown on their heads. This crown swells up and turns yellow-orange during the breeding season. Their tail feathers are bluish-grey with eye-shaped spots called ocelli. These spots have a bright gold tip at the end.

Life for these birds follows the seasons. The breeding season starts in early February. It reaches its peak in March and ends in April. During this time, males do a special dance to find a mate. They tap their feet quickly on the ground. Then, they move their tails and vibrate their wings.

The males also sing a song that starts with low thumps. This song sounds like a small motor starting up. It gets faster and louder until the bird is very loud.

Finding food is a big part of their day. These birds spend most of their time on the ground. They eat many things like seeds, nuts, and leaves. They also eat insects like beetles, moths, and leafcutter ants.

They prefer to run to escape danger. However, they can fly fast and strong for short trips. They sleep high in trees at night to stay safe from predators like jaguars.

People in the Yucatán Peninsula have known these birds for a long time. The Mayans had stories about the turkey and its feathers. They even found turkey remains in the tombs of Mayan chiefs. In 2002, Mexican authorities said the bird was endangered. Since 2004, the IUCN has called them Near Threatened. This happened because of changes in how land is used. It also happened because of hunting by people living in the region.
