Its fur has many black markings on a creamy or gray background. These markings include spots on the head and stripes on the back. Every ocelot has a unique color pattern. This makes them easy to tell apart. They are the largest members of the genus Leopardus.

Most ocelots are solitary and active at night. During the day, they rest in trees or cool dens on the ground. They often hunt during twilight when the sun is rising or setting. To find food, they follow scent trails. They might walk at a speed of about 1.5 miles per hour. Sometimes they wait near a spot for up to 60 minutes.

Scientists have studied these cats for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first described the ocelot in 1758. Later, John Edward Gray proposed the name Leopardus in 1842. Many different scientists described specific specimens over the years. For example, Frédéric Cuvier described a specimen from Brazil in 1824. Jacques Pucheran described one from Texas in 1855. Experts later grouped these into different subspecies based on their fur and spots.

They prefer areas with thick plants and water. They are carnivores that eat meat. They hunt small animals like armadillos, opossums, and rodents. Some ocelots in Venezuela even eat land crabs during the wet season. A female can have a litter of one to three kittens. These kittens stay with their mother for up to two years.

Ocelots are related to other wild cats like the margay and the oncilla. They are similar in size to a bobcat. However, the ocelot is usually larger and heavier. They share much of their home with the jaguar. Today, ocelots face many hard jobs. They deal with habitat destruction and hunting. They also face dangers from traffic accidents. Some populations are decreasing in many parts of their range.
