Because they live in so many places, they are very important to nature. They are a keystone species, which means they help keep many other living things in balance.

Cougars are built for hunting by hiding and then jumping.

They are ambush predators that like to sneak up on their food. They have strong necks and jaws to hold onto what they catch. Their front paws have five claws, and their back paws have four. These claws can pull back inside their paws when they are not using them. They also have very large back legs. These legs help them leap high into trees or run fast in short bursts. Most of the time, they hunt animals like deer or small rodents.

Learning about the cougar's name is like solving a puzzle.

The word cougar comes from the Portuguese word çuçuarana. This word originally came from the Tupi language. Long ago, a man named Georg Marcgrave called them cuguacu ara. In 1774, a man named Comte de Buffon changed that name to cuguar. Later, the English language changed it to the word we use today. The name puma is also very common in science books. It comes from the Quechua language in Latin America.

These cats live across a huge area of the world.

They live from the Yukon in Canada all the way down to Chile. They can live in forests, deserts, and even high mountains. In North America, males weigh about 150 pounds on average. Females are usually smaller and weigh about 110 pounds. In places like British Columbia, some males can weigh much more. Their color is usually a plain tawny brown. However, kittens are born with spots and blue eyes to help them hide.

Cougars are closely related to other famous cats.

They are most like the cheetah and the jaguarundi. Even though they are called mountain lions, they do not only live in mountains. They can also live in lowlands or near rivers. They are very shy animals and usually stay away from people. Most cougars like to live all by themselves. This makes them very different from animals that live in big groups. They are the largest cats that are able to purr.
