The serval is a slender, medium-sized wild cat from Africa.

It is the only member of its group, known as the genus Leptailurus. This name comes from Greek words meaning "fine, delicate cat." These cats live in many places like grasslands, wetlands, and bamboo thickets. They are often found in sub-Saharan countries. In some areas, they live near water like savannas or reeds.

They avoid rainforests and very dry areas.

To hunt, the serval uses a very special way of working. It is a carnivore, which means it eats meat. Most of its food is rodents like vlei rats.

The cat uses its huge ears to hear prey moving. It can stay very still for up to 15 minutes. When it hears something, it leaps high into the air. It can jump two meters up and two meters far. The cat lands on its front paws to catch the prey. Then, it uses a bite to the neck or head to finish the hunt.

People have studied the serval for a long time. Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber first described the cat in 1776. In 1765, a man named Georges-Louis Leclerc used the name "serval." This name came from the Portuguese word for lynx. Many scientists later found different types of servals in many places. They found them in Algeria, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Uganda. Even in 1914, a scientist named Glover Morrill Allen described a male serval from Sudan.

Servals have many interesting physical facts. They have the longest legs of any cat compared to their body size. Their coat is golden-yellow or buff with black spots and stripes. They have large ears that can rotate 180 degrees to find sounds.

A serval can weigh about 14 kilograms. They live in home ranges that can be as large as 20 square kilometers. A mother cat has a litter of one to four kittens. These kittens start hunting at six months and leave home at 12 months.

Some of these traits are familiar to people with house cats. For example, servals can purr just like a pet cat. They can also hiss, growl, and meow. In 1986, a new kind of cat called a Savannah cat was born. This was a hybrid, or a mix, between a male serval and a female domestic cat.

These hybrid cats can be good swimmers. They might even follow their owners around like a dog. This shows how the serval's traits can mix with the cats we know at home.
