The cheetah is a very special kind of large cat. It is the fastest animal living on land today.

This animal is built perfectly for chasing. It has a flexible spine and long limbs. Its back legs have very strong muscles to help it push off the ground.

The cheetah has tan or creamy white fur. This fur is covered in solid black spots. It also has black lines on its face that look like tear marks.

To catch food, the cheetah uses a very specific way of working. First, it stalks its prey and gets very close. It likes to hunt medium-sized animals like impala or gazelles.

Once it is close enough, the cheetah charges at a high speed. It uses its dewclaw to strike the prey during the chase. Finally, it kills the prey with a bite to the throat. Most of the animals it eats weigh less than 50 kilograms.

People have known about cheetahs for a very long time. Scientists first described the cheetah in the late 1700s. A man named Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber gave it its first scientific name in 1777. Later, Joshua Brookes suggested the name Acinonyx in 1828.

In the past, people called them hunting leopards. This was because they could be tamed for hunting. They have even been kept in zoos since the early 1800s.

There are four different types of cheetahs living in the world today. Most live in Africa, but some live in central Iran.

In 2022, some African cheetahs were moved to India. In 2021, experts estimated there were 6,517 cheetahs in the wild.

This number is low, so they are listed as Vulnerable. They face hard jobs like losing their homes or getting sick. One type, the Northwest African cheetah, is even more at risk.

Cheetahs are part of a group of cats called the Puma lineage. This group includes other animals like the cougar and the jaguarundi.

Even though they look like other cats, they are unique. For example, some cheetahs have a rare look called a king cheetah. These have large, blotchy spots and wide stripes.

You might see cheetahs in movies, books, or even advertisements. They are truly one of nature's most amazing runners.
