Galliformes are a group of heavy-bodied birds that live mostly on the ground.

This order includes about 290 different species. Scientists divide these birds into five main families. One family is Phasianidae, which includes chickens, turkeys, and pheasants. Another is Odontophoridae, which contains New World quails. There are also the Numididae, the Cracidae, and the Megapodiidae.

These birds live on every continent except Antarctica. They avoid the deepest deserts and the coldest, icy places. Together with waterfowl, they are often called fowl.

These birds play a big job in nature. They act as insectivores and vermivores, which means they eat insects and worms. They also help spread seeds to new places. Most galliform birds are non-migratory, so they stay in one area. To escape predators, they often use running instead of flying.

Many species show sexual dimorphism. This means males and females look different from each other. In most species, the males are much more colorful. They use bright feathers and loud sounds to attract mates. They might strut or fluff their head feathers to show off.

The history of these birds goes back millions of years. Their ancestors were some of the few birds to survive the K-T Event. This was a huge event where an asteroid hit Earth and killed the dinosaurs. While many birds lived in trees, the ancestors of galliformes lived on the ground. This helped them stay safe from the blast and destruction.

Fossil evidence shows birds like Austinornis lentus lived a long time ago. This bird was found in the Austin Chalk near McKinney, Texas. It lived about 85 million years ago. Other fossils have been found in Argentina and England too.

Scientists use many facts to group these birds. The name Galliformes comes from the Latin word Gallus, which means rooster.

Modern studies show that turkeys and pheasants are very close relatives. In the past, some scientists thought turkeys and grouse were separate families. Now, they are often grouped into the Phasianidae family. Some birds, like the megapodes, are known as incubator birds. They build mounds to help hatch their eggs. These birds are very different from the waterfowl in the Anseriformes order.

You can see the link to these birds in your own home. Many people farm galliform birds as poultry. The most famous example is the chicken.

Chickens actually came from a wild bird called the red junglefowl. People also hunt some species as upland game birds. These are often called gamefowl. Whether they are in a farm or a wild forest, these birds are a huge part of our world. They have survived for a very long time by staying close to the earth.
