Galliformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Galliformes is an order of heavy-bodied, terrestrial birds.

The name comes from the Latin word *Gallus*, which means rooster. This group contains about 290 different species. They are often called landfowl or gallinaceous birds. Together with the semi-aquatic Anseriformes, also known as waterfowl, they are collectively called fowl.

These birds are found on every continent except Antarctica. However, they do not live in the innermost deserts or perpetually icy regions. They play vital roles in their ecosystems. Many act as insectivores and vermivores by eating insects and worms. They also serve as important seed dispersers.

Most galliform species are non-migratory ground-dwellers. To escape predators, they often rely on running rather than flying. Many species exhibit sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females look different.

In most species, the males are much more colorful than the females. They use elaborate courtship behaviors to attract mates. These behaviors include strutting, vocal sounds, and fluffing their head or tail feathers. This visual and auditory display is a key part of their life cycle.

Scientists divide the order into five distinct families. The Phasianidae is a large family including chickens, junglefowl, quails, partridges, pheasants, turkeys, peafowl, and grouse.

The Odontophoridae family contains the New World quails. The Numididae family includes the guinea fowl. The Cracidae family consists of birds like chachalacas and curassows.

Finally, the Megapodiidae family contains incubator birds, such as the malleefowl and brushturkeys. These birds are known for building mounds to hatch their eggs.

Modern taxonomy has changed how we understand these birds. For a long time, turkeys and grouse were considered separate families. However, they likely originated recently from partridge- or pheasant-like birds. Because of this, the Phasianidae family now includes them as subfamilies.

Turkeys became larger after their ancestors moved to North America. In that region, they did not have to compete with pheasant-sized birds. Meanwhile, the ancestors of grouse adapted to harsh climates. This allowed them to colonize subarctic regions.

Evolutionary history shows that galliform ancestors were very resilient. They were among the main survivors of the K-T Event. This was the massive event that killed off the non-avian dinosaurs. During the dinosaur era, the dominant birds were the enantiornithes. These were toothed birds that lived in trees and the skies.

In contrast, the ancestors of galliformes were a niche group. They were toothless and lived on the ground. When the asteroid impact occurred, it destroyed creatures in trees and on open ground. The small, ground-dwelling ancestors of galliformes were protected from the blast.

Fossil evidence helps us trace this long history. One notable fossil is *Austinornis lentus*. It was found in the Austin Chalk near McKinney, Texas. This bird lived about 85 million years ago.

Another specimen, PVPH 237, was found in Argentina. It dates to the Late Cretaceous, about 90 million years ago. True galliforms have been known since the mid-Eocene, about 45 million years ago. These birds eventually replaced their older relatives during the early Neogene. Modern phasianids began appearing around the Oligocene-Miocene boundary, roughly 25 to 20 million years ago.

Galliformes have a significant connection to human life. Many species have been domesticated into poultry for meat and eggs. The most famous example is the chicken, which was domesticated from the red junglefowl.

Other wild species are hunted as upland game birds. These are often called gamefowl. Beyond food, these birds remain a major part of biological studies. Their ability to survive extreme geological changes makes them a fascinating subject for scientists studying bird evolution and survival.
