Golden pheasant

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The golden pheasant is a beautiful bird from the mountains of China.

Some people also call it the rainbow pheasant. This bird belongs to a group called Galliformes. These are birds that often live on the ground. The golden pheasant is a special kind of gamebird. It is very important to study how these birds live in the wild.

Male birds have many bright colors. They have a golden crest on their heads. Their bodies are a bright red color. They also have an orange cape on their backs. This cape looks like a fan with black and orange stripes. The male has yellow eyes and yellow legs. The female looks very different from the male.

She has dull brown feathers to help her hide. She is also more slender than the male. Some females might grow male feathers later in life.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. A man named Carl Linnaeus described them in 1758. He was a naturalist from Sweden. He first named them Phasianus pictus. The name pictus comes from a Latin word meaning "painted." Later, in 1834, John Edward Gray moved them to a new group. This group is called the genus Chrysolophus.

These birds live in the forests of western China. However, they now live in many other places too. People have released them in the United Kingdom and Canada. They are also found in the United States and Mexico. In England, they were seen in Norfolk in 1845. Some populations in Great Britain grew to 2,000 birds. Later, the number of birds went down because of predators.

Golden pheasants spend most of their time on the ground. They like to eat grain, leaves, and small bugs. They can fly in short bursts called flapping flight. This happens because they lack a certain deep muscle. They prefer to run and hide instead of flying. At night, they fly up to sleep in trees.

The females lay 8 to 12 eggs at a time. They sit on the eggs for 22 or 23 days. This helps the babies grow inside the shells.
