Golden pheasant

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The golden pheasant is a bright bird from China. It is also called the rainbow pheasant.

Male birds are very colorful. They have red bodies and gold feathers. They have a bright orange cape on their backs. This cape looks like a fan. The males also have yellow eyes. Their tails are very long. In fact, the tail is two-thirds of their whole body.

Females look very different. They have dull brown feathers. This helps them hide in the forest. They are also more slender than the males.

These birds live in mountain forests. They spend most of their time on the ground. They like to eat seeds, leaves, and bugs. They can fly in short bursts. However, they prefer to run to stay safe. They sleep in trees at night.

Golden pheasants lay 8 to 12 eggs. They sit on the eggs to keep them warm. This is called incubation. It takes about 22 to 23 days for the eggs to hatch.
