Phasianidae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Phasianidae is a big family of birds. These birds mostly live on the ground. This group includes many birds we know well. You might know chickens, turkeys, and pheasants. It also includes grouse, quail, and peafowl. There are 185 different species in this family.

Most of these birds are plump. They have short wings and strong legs. Many have a sharp spur on each leg. Some birds, like the peacock, have very bright feathers. Male birds are often larger than females. They can also have colorful parts on their faces. We call these parts combs or wattles.

These birds eat many different things. They eat seeds, nuts, and fruit. They also eat bugs, slugs, and even small lizards. Most of them build nests on the ground. A mother hen usually sits on the eggs to keep them warm. She might lay between 7 and 12 eggs at a time. Some of these birds live in Africa or Asia. Others live in North America. The wild junglefowl is the ancestor of the chicken we see on farms today.
