Peafowl are large birds.

The males are called peacocks. The females are called peahens. There are three main types. The Indian peafowl comes from India. The green peafowl lives in Southeast Asia. The Congo peafowl lives in the Congo Basin.

Peacocks are famous for their bright feathers. These feathers are not actually part of their tail. They are long feathers called coverts. These coverts have many eyespots.

Peacocks use these to show off. This is called a courtship ritual. They fan their feathers to find a mate.

Peacock colors are very bright. These colors come from structural coloration. This means the color comes from the shape of the feathers. Tiny parts of the feathers catch the light. This makes the colors shift when the bird moves. This is called iridescence.

Scientists study why peacocks have such big tails. Charles Darwin thought they help attract females. Other experts think the big tail is a handicap. It is hard to survive with such a heavy tail. Only the strongest males can live with it. This shows the female that the male is very fit.
