There are three main species of these birds. The Indian peafowl lives in the Indian subcontinent. The green peafowl comes from Southeast Asia. The Congo peafowl lives in the Congo Basin.

. Males are called peacocks and females are called peahens. Even though peahen is the female name, people often use the word peacock for both. These birds are very important for scientists to study. They help us understand how animals change over time.

Peacocks have a very special way of showing off.

Their huge, colorful display is not actually their tail. It is made of long feathers called upper tail coverts. These feathers have many bright eyespots, also called ocelli. During courtship, a male will fan these feathers out. He often turns to catch the sunlight at a specific angle. This makes his feathers shimmer and glow. He might even shiver his feathers to get attention.

The bright colors of a peacock are quite amazing. They do not come from simple dyes or pigments. Instead, they come from structural coloration. This happens because of tiny structures on the feathers. These tiny parts are called barbules. They are shaped in a way that reflects light. This creates a beautiful effect called iridescence. Because of this, the colors seem to change when you move. The colors can look different depending on your viewing angle.

Scientists have many ideas about why peacocks have such big tails.

Charles Darwin suggested that these features evolved through sexual selection. This means males grew big tails to attract females. Another scientist, Amotz Zahavi, proposed the handicap principle. He thought the large tail is a hard job to carry. It makes it harder to hide from predators. Only the strongest males can survive with such a big tail. This tells the female that the male is very fit.

We can see how these traits affect the next generation.

A researcher named Marion Petrie studied birds in England. She found that males with more eyespots had more success. Their chicks also grew up to be heavier. These chicks were better at avoiding predators in the wild. This shows that the bright feathers help the whole family. Other studies, like one by Mariko Takahashi in Japan, found different results. She found that females did not always choose the biggest tails. This shows that nature is still a big mystery.
