Tragopans are a special group of birds.

They belong to the pheasant family. Many people call them horned pheasants. This name comes from a unique feature. The males have two bright horns on their heads. These are fleshy parts that can stand up. They use these horns during courtship displays. Tragopans are also unique among their family. Most related birds do not nest in trees.

Tragopans are different because they do nest in trees.

How do these birds show off? The male uses his colorful horns to impress. He can erect these fleshy parts on his head. This happens during courtship. Courtship is a way birds interact to find mates. Even though they look like pheasants, they are not closely related. They are a separate genus. This means they are a distinct group of birds. Their behavior and looks set them apart from other pheasants.

We know about these birds thanks to history. A French naturalist named Georges Cuvier introduced the genus. He did this in the year 1829. He named it after the satyr tragopan. The name itself has a very old story. It comes from a mythical bird. Roman authors Pliny and Pomponius Mela wrote about it. They described a purple-headed bird with horns.
