Vampire bat

Vampire bats are a very special kind of bat. They live in Central and South America in warm places. Most bats eat fruit, bugs, or nectar. However, vampire bats eat only blood. This way of eating is called hematophagy.

There are three living species of these bats today. One is the common vampire bat, which mostly eats mammals. The other two are the hairy-legged and white-winged vampire bats. These two species mostly feed on the blood of birds.

Feeding on blood is a hard job for a mammal. A bat must handle a lot of liquid without getting sick. It must also avoid too much iron in its body. To eat, the common vampire bat finds a sleeping animal. It uses its nose to sense heat from the skin.

The bat licks the skin to make it soft. Then, it uses its sharp front teeth to make a small cut. The bat's saliva helps the blood keep flowing so it can drink.

Scientists have studied how these bats changed over a long time. The vampire bat lineage split from its family 26 million years ago. The hairy-legged vampire bat split from the others 21.7 million years ago. Some think the first vampire bats might have eaten bird blood. Recent studies suggest they may have come from insect-eating bats. It did not take long for them to change. They grew all their blood-feeding tools in just 4 million years.

These bats have many amazing body parts. Their front teeth are very sharp for cutting skin. They do not have enamel, which keeps the teeth sharp like blades.

Their brains are also special for hearing. They can hear the regular breathing sounds of sleeping animals. The common vampire bat can even sense heat like a snake. It has special sensors on its nose to find warm spots. This helps the bat find where blood is close to the surface.

Vampire bats are also very kind to their friends. They live in large groups in dark places like caves. A bat can only live for two days without food. If a bat cannot find food, it might beg a friend. A donor bat will then share some blood to help. This sharing helps the whole colony stay strong and healthy. They even use special calls to find each other in the dark. This social life helps them survive in the wild.
