The Honduran white bat is a tiny and very special mammal.

It is known for its bright white fur. This is quite rare for a bat. Only about six out of 1,300 known bat species have fur this color. This bat belongs to the leaf-nosed bat family. It is the only member of its specific group, called a monotypic genus. Because it is so unique, it is a very important animal to study. Scientists call its group Ectophylla, which means "out leaf" in Greek.

This bat has a very clever way of making a home.

It builds what we call a "tent" out of large plant leaves. The bat uses its teeth to cut the ribs of a leaf. This causes the leaf to fold down into a small shelter. These tents are usually made from Heliconia plants. The bats like to use leaves that are young and less than 30 days old. A tent stays useful for about 7.5 weeks. After that, the modified leaf eventually dies and the bat must find a new one.

People first learned about this bat a long time ago.

An American zoologist named Harrison Allen described the species in 1892. He used a specimen collected by Charles Haskins Townsend. That specimen was found near the Coco River in Honduras in 1887. Even though the bat is easy to see, it was hard to find. Sixty years passed between the first discovery and the next one in 1963. Today, we know they live in Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.

There are many interesting facts about how this bat looks and eats.

The bat is very small, weighing only about 8 grams. It has bright yellow ears, lips, and a nose-leaf. This yellow color comes from carotenoids, which are pigments found in food. The bat gets these from eating a specific type of fig tree. These yellow colors help the bat hide. When sunlight shines through the green tent leaves, the light looks yellow. This helps the white bat blend in with its surroundings.

Learning about these bats can even help humans. Scientists are studying how the bat uses carotenoids in its skin. This might help us understand how to treat eye problems in people. The bat is currently listed as near-threatened by the IUCN. This means its population is dropping. Much of this is because people are turning forest land into farms. This makes it hard for the bats to find the specific fig trees they need to survive.
