Bulldog bat

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Bulldog bats are very special animals. They belong to a group called Noctilionidae. People often call them fishing bats too. These bats live in warm areas called the Neotropics. You can find them from Mexico down to Argentina. They also live on islands in the Caribbean. They like to sleep in hollow trees or caves. Some even sleep in homes made by people.

The greater bulldog bat has a cool way of eating. It is piscivorous, which means its main food is fish. The bat uses echolocation to find its meal. It listens for tiny ripples on the water. Then, it uses long, curved claws to grab fish. The bat flies about 2 to 3 cm below the surface. It makes sweeps between 30 cm and 3 m long. A single bat might catch 30 small fish in one night.

Scientists have studied these bats for a long time. We know about a fossil species named Noctilio lacrimaelunaris. This fossil comes from the Miocene period in Argentina. There is also a bat called the naked bulldog bat. However, that bat belongs to a different family called Molossidae. These are known as free-tailed bats. This shows how many different types of bats exist.

Bulldog bats have many unique physical traits. They have orange or brown fur on their bodies. Their length is between 7 and 14 cm. They weigh anywhere from 20 to 75 g. Their wings can spread up to 60 cm wide. They have large, funnel-shaped ears that are very pointed. They even have cheek-pouches to store their food. Their lips have a fold of skin that looks like a bulldog.

Baby bats start life with some amazing skills. They are born with very large feet. They use these big feet to cling to their mothers. Soon after birth, they react to sounds. They also make their own short ultrasound noises. These babies do not fly for 5 or 6 weeks. They continue to drink milk for up to 3 months. This helps them grow strong for life.
