Bulldog bat

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Bulldog bats live in warm places near water. They live from Mexico to Argentina. They also live on islands in the Caribbean. These bats sleep in caves or hollow trees.

These bats have orange or brown fur. They have large, pointed ears. They also have pouches in their cheeks. These pouches hold food. Their lips look like a bulldog's face. This is how they got their name.

Some bulldog bats eat insects. The greater bulldog bat eats mostly fish. This is called being piscivorous. They use echolocation to find food. This means they use sound to see. They listen for ripples on the water. Then, they use long claws to grab fish. They fly just below the water. A bat can catch 30 fish in one night.

Baby bats are born with very big feet. They use these feet to hold their mothers. They do not fly for five or six weeks. They drink milk from their mothers for three months.
