It has bright white fur. This is very rare for a bat. Most bats do not have white fur. This bat lives in Central American forests. It builds its own home called a tent.

The bat uses its teeth to cut leaf ribs. This makes large leaves fold down. The leaves come from plants like Heliconia. These tents keep the bat dry from rain. They also hide the bat from predators.

The bat has bright yellow ears and lips. This color comes from carotenoids. Carotenoids are natural pigments found in food. The bat gets these from eating figs. It mostly eats one kind of fig.

The yellow color helps the bat hide. Sunlight through the leaves looks yellowish. This helps the white bat blend in. This is called camouflage. Scientists study these bats to learn about human eyes. The bat is near-threatened. This is because people are changing its forest home into farms.
