The Thomisidae are a huge family of spiders. This group includes about 170 different genera. There are also more than 2,100 different species in this family. Many people call them crab spiders. Some people also call them flower spiders. These names help us understand how they live.

These spiders are ambush predators. This means they wait for food to come to them. They do not spin webs to catch insects. Instead, they use their bodies to hide. Their two front legs are long and strong. They use these legs to grab and hold prey. Then, they use a venomous bite to paralyze the insect. Some species even change color to match a flower. This helps them hide while they wait for a visitor.

Scientists have studied these spiders for a long time. Many different people have named the groups within this family. For example, Simon named the genus Acentroscelus in 1886. Other researchers like Tang and Li named Acrotmarus in 2012. The family Aphantochilidae was added to the Thomisidae in the late 1980s. This shows how our knowledge of spiders keeps growing. New species and names are still being found today.

There are many interesting facts about their bodies. In some species, the females are much larger than the males. This is called sexual dimorphism. In the species Thomisus onustus, females are more than 60 times as massive as males. One reason for this is to help females make more eggs. Small males might stay small to travel more easily. This helps them find mates more quickly.

Crab spiders can be found in many different places. Some live in South America, like the genus Aphantochilus. Others live in China or Australia. You might see them in your own garden. Some hide in leaf litter on the ground. Others live in the crevices of tree bark. Some even look like bird droppings to stay safe. Most of these spiders are not harmful to humans. You can watch them work in nature without fear.
