Jumping spiders are amazing hunters that belong to the family Salticidae.

This is a huge group of living things. It includes around 7,000 different species. These spiders make up about 13% of all spider species. They are easy to recognize because of their unique eye patterns.

You can also tell them apart by the shape of their body. Their faces are flat and look toward the direction they are moving. This helps them see the world in a very special way.

Most jumping spiders have eight eyes that work together.

The two front middle eyes are the most important. These are called the anterior median eyes. They work like tiny telescopes with two lenses. These eyes help the spider see colors and judge distances. They even use a trick called image defocus to see how far away things are.

Other eyes, called the posterior lateral eyes, act like wide-angle sensors. These help the spider see movement from the sides or even behind.

When it is time to move, these spiders use a clever way to jump.

They do not have huge muscles like a grasshopper. Instead, they use a hydraulic system. This means they change the pressure of the fluid inside their bodies to extend their legs. Most species use their third or fourth pair of legs to leap. They can jump two or three body lengths easily. One spider, called Colonus puerperus, jumped 38 times its own body length!

Before a spider leaps, it stays safe by using silk. It attaches a silk thread called a dragline to the surface. This acts like a safety rope for the spider. If the jump does not go as planned, the spider can climb back up.

They also use silk to build small "pup tents." These silk shelters are used for sleeping at night. The spiders also use these tents to stay safe during the winter. They even use them as places to store their egg cases.

Watching a jumping spider hunt is like watching a tiny explorer.

They often hunt during the day because they see so well. A spider will spot prey and swivel its body to look closely. It might even take a long, winding path to sneak up on an insect. Some spiders, like the Portia genus, can take long detours to find a meal. This shows how smart they can be despite having tiny brains. They are masters of using sight and silk to survive in a big world.
