Wolf spiders are amazing hunters that belong to the family Lycosidae.

Most spiders catch food by spinning webs to trap bugs. Wolf spiders do not do this. Instead, they are agile hunters that chase prey or pounce on them. They often live alone in solitude. Some species like to wait near the mouth of a burrow for food to pass by. Because they want to stay hidden, they use colors that match their homes. This camouflage helps them hide from others while they hunt.

These spiders have very special eyes that help them see well. They have eight eyes arranged in three different rows. The bottom row has four small eyes. The middle row has two very large eyes. The top row has two medium eyes. These large eyes help them see much better than most other spiders. They have the third-best eyesight of all spider groups. Some spiders have a special tissue in their eyes called a tapetum lucidum. This tissue reflects light back. It makes their eyes glow when you shine a flashlight on them.

Female wolf spiders are very careful parents. They carry a round egg sac made of silk. They attach this sac to their spinnerets at the end of their abdomen.

The mother must hold her abdomen up so the sac does not drag on the ground. This can be a hard job, but she still hunts. When the tiny spiderlings hatch, they climb up their mother's legs. They crowd onto her back for several weeks. She carries them until they are big enough to live on their own.

Wolf spiders live in many different places around the world. You can find them in woods, shrublands, and even suburban gardens. Some species live in wet forests or alpine meadows. Some even live in homes or sheds. In the United States, the Carolina wolf spider is a very large species. Its body can be more than one inch long. The Carolina wolf spider is also the official state spider of South Carolina. A student named Skyler B. Hutto helped make this happen in the year 2000.

Many people think of wolf spiders as "beneficial bugs." This is because they help control the number of insects in gardens and farms. They eat pests like crickets, ants, and cockroaches. They can even eat small lizards or frogs. While they can bite if they feel threatened, their bites are not dangerous to humans. A bite might cause some redness or mild pain. They are a helpful part of nature that keeps many environments healthy and balanced.
