Crab spiders are a large family of spiders.

There are over 2,100 species in this group. They get their name from how they move. They can scuttle sideways or backwards like a crab. Their two front legs are long and strong. They use these legs to grab prey.

Most crab spiders are ambush predators. This means they hide and wait for food. They do not spin webs to catch bugs. Some sit on flowers to wait. They may even change their color to match a flower. This helps them hide from visiting insects. Other types hide in tree bark or leaf litter. Some even look like bird droppings to stay safe.

In this family, females are often much larger than males. This is called sexual dimorphism. In one type, females are 60 times heavier than males! Being big helps females make more eggs. Small males can move more easily to find mates.

Most of these spiders are not harmful to people. Some distant cousins can be venomous, but bites are rare.

You can safely watch them hunt in your garden.
