Lepidoptera is a huge group of winged insects. This group includes all butterflies and moths.

There are about 180,000 known species in this order. That is 10% of all known living things. It is the second largest group of insects on Earth.

Most of these insects live in the tropics. However, they can be found on every continent except Antarctica. You can find them in deserts or rainforests. They even live in the Arctic Circle and the Himalayas.

These insects go through a process called complete metamorphosis.

It begins when a female lays eggs on a host plant. A larva, known as a caterpillar, hatches from the egg.

Caterpillars have chewing mouthparts called mandibles. They use these to eat leaves. As they grow, they go through stages called instars. Next, they become a pupa.

Some moths spin a silk cocoon for protection. Butterflies usually form a hard skin called a chrysalis. Inside the pupa, the body changes into a mature adult.

Scientists who study these insects are called lepidopterists.

The name Lepidoptera was first used in 1746. A scientist named Carl Linnaeus used the term in his book. The name comes from Greek words. One word means "scale" and the other means "wing."

The word "butterfly" comes from Old English. It might come from the pale butter color of some wings. The word "moth" also comes from Old English. Even the word "caterpillar" has very old roots from Middle English.

Adult insects have many special body parts. Their wings are covered in tiny scales. These scales look like shingles on a roof.

They create many colors and patterns. These patterns help with camouflage or finding mates. Most adults use a long tube called a proboscis to drink.

This tube is kept coiled under the head when not in use. Some insects are very small. Others, like the Atlas moth, have huge wingspans.

Most adults eat nectar, but some do not eat at all. They live on energy stored from when they were caterpillars.

Lepidopterans are very important to our world. As adults, they are helpful pollinators. They move pollen between flowers as they drink nectar.

However, caterpillars can sometimes be a problem. They are often pests in farming. This is because they can eat huge amounts of leaves very quickly.

Some species even live in unusual places. For example, sloth moths live only in the fur of sloths. Other species can live in bat caves or honeycombs.
