Longhorn beetle

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Longhorn beetles belong to a huge family called Cerambycidae. There are over 35,000 different species described in this group. Most of these beetles are famous for their very long antennae. These feelers are often as long as, or even longer than, the beetle's own body.

You can find these insects on every continent except for Antarctica. Their name comes from a story in Greek mythology. A shepherd named Cerambus was turned into a large beetle with horns after an argument.

How do you tell a longhorn beetle apart from other insects? One way is to look at their face. Their antennae grow from special bumps called tubercles. Even beetles with short antennae, like the species Neandra brunnea, still have these bumps.

Most longhorns use colors to hide, which is called being cryptically colored. However, some species pretend to be other insects. They might mimic the look of ants, bees, or wasps to stay safe.

The life of a longhorn beetle involves a lot of chewing. The babies are called larvae, and people often call them roundheaded borers.

These larvae live inside plants by eating stems, trunks, or roots. They find their food by smelling special chemicals. They can smell things like ethanol or even smoke from forest fires.

This helps them find weak or injured trees. Some larvae, like the old-house borer, can even chew through wood in buildings.

Adult beetles have different ways of eating depending on their type. Many adults eat nectar, pollen, fruit, or sap. Some even eat bark or needles.

This eating can help plants through pollination. In New Zealand, the Zorion beetle helps native plants by eating pollen. Some rare orchids in Poland and South Africa also rely on these beetles. In fact, one orchid in South Africa uses a trick to attract the beetle Chorothyse hessei. A few special beetles, like the genus Elytroleptus, are even hunters that eat other beetles.

Scientists have studied these beetles for a very long time. The oldest fossils found are from China and date back 122 million years.

These fossils come from the Early Cretaceous period. We also have fossils from Myanmar that are about 100 million years old. Today, scientists still study how different groups, like the Lamiinae, are related. The titan beetle is a famous example from South America. It can grow to a body length of just over 4 inches. It is often called one of the largest insects in the world.
