life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Longhorn beetles are a large family of insects. There are over 35,000 known species. Most have very long antennae, which are feelers on their heads.

These feelers can be longer than the beetle's body. They live on every continent except Antarctica.

Many species look like other insects. Some mimic ants, bees, or wasps. They come in many shapes and colors. The titan beetle is one of the largest insects. It lives in South America.

The babies of these beetles are called larvae. We often call them roundheaded borers.

These larvae eat plant tissue. They chew through stems, roots, and trunks. They can even live in wood inside buildings. Some larvae find trees by smelling chemicals. They can even smell smoke from forest fires.

Some adult beetles eat nectar and pollen. As they eat, they help plants grow. This is called pollination.

In New Zealand, the Zorion beetle helps native plants. Some rare orchids rely on these beetles to live.
