This beetle is also one of the largest flying insects on Earth. It lives in warm, tropical rain forests. These forests stretch from southern Mexico down to Bolivia. You can find them in places like Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia. They also live in the Lesser Antilles and Trinidad and Tobago.

Life for these beetles starts as a very large larva.

These larvae live inside rotting wood for about two years. They go through three different growth stages called instars. In a lab, the first stage lasts about 50 days. The second stage lasts about 56 days. The longest stage, the third instar, can last 450 days. After that, they stay in a pupal stage for 32 days. Finally, they emerge as adults.

Many people find these beetles fascinating to study. The name comes from a hero in old stories named Hercules. This hero was known for having great strength. Scientists use the name Dynastes hercules to identify them. A famous scientist named Linnaeus named them in 1758. There are many different subspecies of this beetle. Some names include hercules, ecuatorianus, and lichyi. These names help experts tell the different groups apart.

Male and female beetles look very different. This is called sexual dimorphism. Only the males have large, impressive horns.

One horn sits on the head. A much larger horn sits on the pronotum, which is part of the body. The males use these horns to fight other males. They try to lift and throw their rivals to win a mate. The color of their wing covers can even change. They look olive-green when it is dry. They turn black when the air is wet.

These beetles play a big role in nature. The larvae eat rotting wood to help the forest. This helps move nutrients back into the soil. Adults eat fresh fruit and tree sap. They use their jaws like a straw to drink sap.

They might eat peaches, apples, or mangoes. Some people even keep them as pets. Scientists have even found a special enzyme in their waste. This enzyme might be used to make cleaning products for humans.
