Goliath beetles are some of the largest insects on Earth.

They are known for their huge size and heavy weight. These beetles belong to the genus Goliathus. There are six different species in this group. They live in the tropical forests of Africa.

These beetles are part of the Scarabaeidae family. They are also part of the Cetoniinae subfamily. They are very important parts of their forest homes.

The life of a Goliath beetle has many steps. It begins as a tiny egg. When it hatches, the larva must eat a lot. These larvae need food with much protein. In the wild, they live in decayed wood and leaves.

They can grow to be very large and heavy. When they are done growing, they build a cell from sandy soil. This cell is a hard cocoon. Inside, the insect goes through metamorphosis. This is a way the body changes from a larva into an adult. The insect then hides until the rains begin.

People have studied these beetles for a long time. Scientists have named many of the different species. For example, Linnaeus named Goliathus goliatus in 1771. Boheman described Goliathus albosignatus in 1857. Other species were named by researchers like Olivier, Kraatz, Moser, and Klug. These names help us know which beetle is which.

Knowing these names helps scientists track how the beetles live.

Each Goliath beetle has a very special look. Males are usually 6 to 11 centimeters long. Females are smaller, ranging from 5 to 8 centimeters.

Males often have colors like black, white, or brown. Females can be silky white or dark chestnut brown. Males have a Y-shaped horn on their heads. They use this horn to fight other males. Females have wedge-shaped heads to help them dig. Both have a hard exoskeleton to protect their bodies. They also have elytra, which are hard covers for their wings.

You can think of the elytra like a shield. They keep the thin flying wings safe underneath. The beetles use their sharp claws to climb trees. They search for sweet tree sap and fruit to eat. In a zoo, they might eat cat or dog food. This food has the protein they need to grow. In the wild, they face hard jobs like losing their forest homes. They also face changes in the weather. Protecting their forests helps these giant beetles stay safe.
