Adult males are 6 to 11 centimeters long. Females are a bit smaller. Males often have black and white patterns. Females can be white or brown. Males have a Y-shaped horn on their head. They use it to fight other males. Females do not have horns. They use their wedge-shaped heads to dig in the dirt.

Both males and females have a hard outer shell. This shell is called an exoskeleton. It protects their organs. They also have hard wing covers called elytra. These covers stay closed while they fly. They hide the thin wings used for flight.

Young beetles are called larvae. They need food with lots of protein. In the wild, they live in leaves and wood. To grow big, they need to eat a lot. When they are ready, they build a cell of sandy soil. They stay inside to change into adults. This change is called metamorphosis. Once they emerge, they eat sweet fruit and tree sap.
