Dung beetle

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Dung beetles are beetles that eat feces. They live on every continent except Antarctica. Many species use their sense of smell to find food.

There are three main ways these beetles live. Rollers make a ball of dung and roll it away. They often bury the ball in soft soil. This ball provides food for their babies. Some beetles are called Tunnelers. They bury dung right where they find it. Others are Dwellers. They simply live inside the dung.

Dung beetles are very strong. One male beetle can pull 1,141 times his own weight. This is like a person pulling six big buses! They also help the Earth in many ways. They bury dung to help plants grow. This makes the soil healthy. They also help move seeds around. In some places, they help farmers by cleaning up animal waste.
