Megaloptera

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Megaloptera are a special group of insects. This group includes alderflies, fishflies, and dobsonflies. There are about 300 known species in this order. Their name comes from Greek words meaning "large wing." This name describes their big and clumsy wings.

Many people do not see them often. The adults live very short lives. They also like to be active at night or at twilight. This makes them hard to find.

The life of a megalopteran has a few steps. It starts with eggs laid on plants over water. A female can lay up to 3,000 eggs at once. The babies are called larvae and live in fresh water. These larvae are carnivores that eat worms and clams. They have strong jaws to catch their prey. They grow slowly over one to five years.

Finally, they crawl onto land to pupate in damp soil. The pupa can even move and use jaws to defend itself.

Scientists have studied these insects for a long time. In the past, they were part of a group called Neuroptera. Now, they are seen as a separate order. They are part of a larger group called Neuropterida. This group also includes lacewings. Megaloptera are closely related to beetles. They are also related to a group called strepsipterans.

There are many interesting facts about these bugs. In Asia, the dobsonfly Acanthacorydalis fruhstorferi is very large. It has a wingspan of up to 150 mm. This makes it the largest aquatic insect in the world by wingspan. In North America, people call the larvae hellgrammites. Anglers often use them as bait.

Some species of adults do not eat at all. They may only live for a few hours or days.

You can see how these insects fit into nature. The larvae live in the water where many fish live. The adults live near the same water. Male dobsonflies have long mandibles that look like tusks. These are not for hurting humans. They use them to impress females or to fight other males. They try to flip each other over during courtship.
