They first appeared about 245 million years ago. This makes them one of the oldest groups of flies. They live all over the world. Most species like warm, wet places.

Adult crane flies look like big mosquitoes. They have long, thin bodies and very long legs. These legs can fall off easily.

Some people call them "mosquito hawks." However, they do not eat mosquitoes. They cannot bite or sting people. Most adults do not eat at all. Some species might drink nectar or water.

Their wings have special patterns.

These patterns help people tell species apart. The babies of crane flies are called leatherjackets.

These larvae are shaped like little tubes. They live in wet soil or rotting wood. Many leatherjackets eat old plants or tiny microbes. Some species even eat living plants. This can make them pests for farmers. Many animals like to eat crane flies. Birds, fish, and spiders all enjoy them as food.
