They do not build permanent nests. Instead, they move all the time. They live in groups called colonies. These colonies can have millions of ants.

Most ants send out scouts to find food. Army ants are different. They send out a large group to hunt together. This helps them catch many prey at once. They can eat 500,000 animals in one day! They eat things like insects, spiders, and worms.

There are different types of ants in the colony. Workers are female ants that find food. Soldiers are larger ants with big jaws. They protect the group.

The queen is the largest ant. She has a very large abdomen, or gaster. This part of her body holds many eggs. She can lay 3 to 4 million eggs every month.

Army ants go through two main stages. First is the nomadic phase. During this time, the ants wander to find food. Next is the stationary phase. The ants stay in one place called a bivouac. They stay still while the new ants grow.
