Whitefly

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Whiteflies are tiny insects. Most are less than 3 mm wide. They belong to the family Aleyrodidae. This name comes from a word meaning "floury." This is because many species are covered in fine wax. This wax looks like white dust.

Whiteflies live on the underside of leaves. They use mouthparts to tap into the phloem. The phloem is the part of a plant that carries food. They suck the sap to eat. This can hurt the plant. It can also lower the plant's turgor pressure. This is the pressure that keeps a plant firm.

These bugs can cause big problems for farmers. They make a sweet liquid called honeydew. This liquid can help black mold grow on plants. Even worse, whiteflies carry many viruses. A virus is a tiny germ that makes plants sick. One species can carry almost 60 different plant diseases. This causes millions of dollars in losses every year.
