The tree has a thick, grey-brown trunk. The bark has deep grooves and vertical plates. Its crown is wide and unevenly shaped. Many of these trees have massive lower branches. Some older trees are pollarded to help them live longer.

In the spring, the tree begins its flowering process.

Male flowers grow in long, thin bunches called catkins. These catkins are about 2 to 4 cm long. The wind carries pollen from these flowers. The female flowers are very small and brown. They sit on new shoots at the tips. These flowers grow on stalks called peduncles. Later, the tree produces its fruit, which are acorns.

Acorns grow in clusters of two or three. They sit in a special shallow cup. This tree is an alternate bearing species. This means it makes huge crops every other year.

Scientists have studied this tree for a long time. Carl Linnaeus named the species in 1753. He wrote about it in his book, Species Plantarum. The name comes from Latin words meaning robust or strong.

Modern scientists have even mapped its entire genome. This was part of the GenOak project. The first version of this map was published in 2016. It contains about 750 million base pairs of DNA. This helps us understand how the tree works.

Many living things depend on the English oak.

In the UK, about 2,300 species live with it. It supports at least 400 types of herbivorous insects. Some insects create growths called galls on the tree. You might see a spongy oak apple gall.

You may also see marble galls on the twigs. Birds like the Eurasian jay eat the acorns. Jays help the tree spread to new places. They bury acorns in the ground to eat later. This helps new oak trees grow in the wild.

Humans have used the oak for many things. The wood is very strong and lasts a long time.

People use this timber for making furniture. The wood has dark and light brown growth rings. In old stories, Scandinavians called it a thunderstorm tree. They linked it to the god Thor. In England, the oak is a national emblem. Some trees are even famous for protecting kings. The wood is very dense, at about 720 kg per cubic meter.
