Nature has many ways of using the bur oak. The acorns are a huge food source for wildlife. American black bears sometimes tear off branches to find them. The tree uses a trick called masting. It makes a massive crop of seeds only every few years. This large amount of food overwhelms the animals that eat them. This ensures that some seeds will survive to grow. Many tiny insects also live on the tree. Some wasps and mites make small bumps called galls on the leaves.

The acorns can even be eaten if they are boiled. You can find bur oaks in many parks and gardens today. They are even planted on sidewalks in cities. Many places in the United States have names like Burr Oak.
