The Mexican blue oak is a special kind of tree. It belongs to the white oak group. This plant is an evergreen. This means it keeps its leaves all year long. It can grow as a small tree. Sometimes it grows as a large shrub. It usually grows 5 to 8 meters tall. The tree has a rounded top called a crown.

Watching this tree change is very interesting. In the spring, the tree makes flowers. This happens while old leaves fall off. New leaves start to grow at the same time. The male flowers look like yellowish-green catkins. These are long, drooping clusters. The female flowers grow alone or in pairs. They grow where the leaf meets the stem. Soon, the tree makes light brown acorns. These nuts sit in scaly, bowl-shaped cups.

Scientists first described this plant in 1853. It has many different names. Some people call it the Arizona blue oak. Others call it the Sonoran blue oak. You might also hear it called the Blue live oak. It is a close relative of the Engelmann oak. Some experts think they might even be the same species.

This tree grows in many specific places. You can find it in the southwestern United States. It lives in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. It also grows in several Mexican states. These include Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sinaloa, and Sonora. The tree likes to live in high grasslands. It also grows in canyons and on mesas. It often lives in places with thin, sandy soil.

Many plants live near the Mexican blue oak. It is often found with Arizona white oak. It also grows near Emory oak. You might see it with pine and juniper trees. Other plants nearby include catclaw mimosa and bullgrass. People are now planting these trees in California. They are used in landscaping at places like Apple Park. People love them because they grow fast. They also have very beautiful blue foliage.
