Juniperus californica

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The California juniper is a special shrub or small tree. It grows in the southwestern part of North America. This plant is very important for its local environment. It provides food and shelter for many native animals. Turkeys and deer often use these plants for help. The sequoia sphinx moth even uses it to grow.

This plant has a very interesting way it works. The adult leaves look like small, bluish-gray scales. Young seedlings have long leaves that look like needles. The bark is ashy gray and looks shredded. Most plants are dioecious, which means they have only one sex. This means one plant has only male or female parts. About 2% of plants are monoecious with both sexes.

Nature has many ways to make seeds. The male cones shed pollen in the early spring. The female cones look like small blue-brown berries. These berries have a white waxy bloom on them. Each cone usually holds just one single seed. These seeds become mature in 8 or 9 months. They eventually turn a reddish-brown color.

This juniper lives in many different places. You can find it in California and Baja California. It also grows in Nevada and Arizona. It lives in places like the Sierra Nevada mountains. It can even grow on Guadalupe Island in the ocean. There are fewer than 10 plants there now. Feral goats almost destroyed that small group in the 1800s.

People have used this plant for a long time. Indigenous groups like the Cahuilla and Ohlone used it. They used the berries for food or meal. Some people used the wood to make bows. Today, many people grow them in home gardens. They are very good at living in dry soil. They are even popular for the art of bonsai.
