Juniperus phoenicea

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Phoenician juniper is a special evergreen plant. It can grow as a large shrub or a small tree. It often has a rounded or irregular shape. The dark grayish-brown bark can peel off in strips. This plant is very important to the Mediterranean region. It stays green throughout the entire year.

This plant has two different types of leaves. Young seedlings have long, needle-like leaves. They are only 1 mm wide. Adult plants have small scale-leaves instead. These are 1 to 2 mm long. The leaves grow in pairs or groups of three. The female cones look like berries. They are orange-brown and hold 3 to 8 seeds. Birds eat these berries to spread the seeds. Male cones release pollen by the wind in early spring.

Scientists used to think this was just one group of plants. They called it a species complex. This meant the plants had many different looks. Now, researchers use genetic studies to tell them apart. They found three distinct species instead of one. One is Juniperus phoenicea L. s.s. in the western Mediterranean. Another is Juniperus turbinata Guss. in Saudi Arabia. The third is Juniperus canariensis Guyot & Mathou in the Canary Islands.

Most of these trees grow in Spain and Southern France. You can find them in Italy and Portugal too. They love hot and dry weather. They often grow on rocky or sandy ground. They like soil that is moderately basic. Some grow very high in the mountains. The highest ones are at 1,970 meters in Sierra Mágina, Spain. Many live between 400 and 1,200 meters.

People use many parts of this plant. The berries are used to flavor gin and food. The wood is very durable and strong. This is because it contains a substance called thujopsene. A biochemist named Jarl Runeburg studied this in 1960. He said it was a very good source of this oil. In Africa, the wood is used for fuel and charcoal. This plant is also a symbol for the island of El Hierro.
