Juniperus phoenicea

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Phoenician juniper is a special plant. It grows in the western Mediterranean region. This includes parts of Spain and France. It also grows in Italy and Portugal. This plant can be a large bush or a small tree. It stays green all year long. The bark is dark and can peel off in strips.

Young plants have long, thin leaves. Older plants have tiny leaves that look like scales. The plant makes small, berry-like cones. These cones are orange-brown. They hold three to eight seeds. Birds eat these berries to help spread the seeds. The male cones make pollen. The wind carries this pollen in the early spring.

This plant likes hot and dry places. It often grows on rocky or sandy ground. It can live with very little rain. Some trees grow very high up in the mountains. The highest ones grow at 1,970 meters in Spain. People use the berries to flavor food and drinks. The wood is very strong and lasts a long time. This tree is a symbol for the island of El Hierro.
