It grows in many parts of North America. This tree can live for a very long time. One old tree was 940 years old!

The tree has reddish-brown bark that peels in strips. It has two types of leaves. Young plants have sharp, needle-like leaves. Adult trees have flat, scale-like leaves.

The tree also makes blue, berry-like cones. These cones have a white wax on them. Many birds eat these berries in the winter. When birds eat them, they spread the seeds to new places. This helps more trees grow.

The wood is very useful too. It smells strong and stays durable in soil. People use the wood for fence posts. They also use it for cedar chests. The scent helps keep moths away from clothes. Some people even use the wood to make pencils or bows. The tree has deep roots. These roots help it survive dry weather. It can also act as a windbreak to stop wind. This protects the soil from blowing away.
