Juniperus oxycedrus

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The prickly juniper is a plant with many names. Some people call it Cade. Others call it sharp cedar. This name comes from its Greek roots. It grows in the Mediterranean region. It can grow on rocky ground near the sea.

This plant can be a bush or a small tree. It has green leaves that look like needles. These leaves grow in groups of three.

Some plants are dioecious. This means there are separate male and female plants. The female plants make seed cones. These cones look like berries. They start green. After 18 months, they turn orange or red. They may have a pink waxy coating.

Birds eat these berry-like cones. The birds digest the fleshy parts. Then, they pass the hard seeds in their droppings. This helps new plants grow.

People also use the wood to make Cade oil. This oil has a strong, smoky smell. It is used in some skin treatments. It is also used as incense.

Some people use it in cosmetics.
