life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The prickly juniper is a very special plant. You might know it by other names like Cade. Some people call it the sharp cedar. This name comes from its Greek roots. It grows across the whole Mediterranean region. It can live on rocky sites near the sea.

This plant can look like a spreading shrub. It can also grow into a small tree. It is a very variable plant. This means it can look many different ways.

There is a neat way this plant works. It is dioecious, which means male and female plants are separate. The female plants grow seed cones. These cones look like little berries. They start out green. They ripen over 18 months. Then they turn orange or red. They may have a pink waxy coating.

Birds eat these fleshy cones. They digest the soft parts. Then they pass the hard seeds in their droppings. This helps the plant spread to new places.

People have studied this plant for a long time. The name was given by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. The name oxycedrus means sharp cedar. Ancient Greeks might have called this the original cedar.

Scientists look at different types of this plant. They found many subspecies. Some are not even closely related to each other. This makes the plant family very interesting to study.

There are many different kinds of prickly juniper. The Western prickly juniper lives in places like Spain and France. The Portuguese prickly juniper lives on the coast.

There is also an Eastern prickly juniper. It grows from Italy to Israel and Iran. The large-fruited juniper lives in coastal sands. One variety from northern Algeria has large purple cones. These plants live in many different lands.

We can also use this plant for things. People make Cade oil from the wood. They use a way called destructive distillation to get it. This oil has a strong smoky smell.

It is used for incense. Some people use it in cosmetics. It is also used in some skin treatments. You can find it in old books like the British Pharmacopaea. It is a very useful plant.
