Cypress trees are evergreen conifers that stay green all year.

These plants belong to the family Cupressaceae. They can be large shrubs or very tall trees. One kind, Cupressus austrotibetica, can grow up to 102 meters tall. This makes it the second-tallest tree species on Earth.

Many people grow them in parks or around temples in Asia. Some species are even used for their timber. This wood is very durable and lasts a long time.

These trees have a unique way of growing. Their leaves are scale-like and only 2 to 6 millimeters long.

On young plants, the leaves look more like needles. The leaves grow in pairs that sit opposite each other. The trees also grow small cones that are 8 to 40 millimeters long. These cones can be round or egg-shaped. They take 18 to 24 months to mature after pollination. Inside, the seeds are small and have two narrow wings on the sides.

Many cypress species have a special way to survive forest fires. They keep their seeds tucked inside closed cones for many years. The seeds stay hidden until a fire kills the parent tree. Once the fire passes, the seeds are released onto the bare, burnt ground. This helps the new trees colonize the empty space. This way of working ensures the forest can grow back. It is a clever way to handle a hard job like a fire.

History and names for these trees are very old. The name cypress comes from the Greek word kypárissos.

In Greek myths, a person named Cyparissus was turned into a tree. This happened after he accidentally killed a deer he loved. Because of this, the tree became a symbol of grief in ancient times. In Roman times, people noticed the roots grow straight down. This meant the roots would not damage burials in the ground.

Scientists use many tools to study these plants today. They use genetic analysis to see how different trees are related. For example, a 2021 study showed that Old World cypresses are close relatives of the Juniperus genus.

Some trees live in warm places like the Mediterranean or China. Others live in the New World, such as California or Mexico. You might notice these trees if you have allergies. They release a lot of pollen, which can be a hard job for your nose!
