It is native to the Mediterranean region. This area includes parts of Southern Europe and the Levant. People have grown these trees for a very long time. They have used them for food since prehistoric times. Today, many people plant them in parks and gardens. This tree even won an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Young trees look like bushy globes. In their middle years, they grow a thick trunk. They eventually look like a large umbrella canopy. The bark is thick and red-brown with deep cracks.

The green leaves are needle-like and grow in bundles of two. Young trees have different blue-green leaves. These adult leaves take about ten years to appear fully.

Making seeds is a slow process for this tree.

The cones are broad and shaped like eggs. It takes 36 months for a cone to mature. This is longer than any other pine tree. Inside are large, pale brown pine nuts. These nuts have a black coating that rubs off easily. Animals like the Iberian magpie help spread the seeds. Humans also move the seeds to new places.

Scientists study where these trees truly belong.

Many people think they come from the Western Mediterranean. The Iberian Peninsula has the largest natural groups of trees. Evidence shows they were in the forest long ago. Pollen from 18,000 to 22,000 years ago was found in France. Some people think they also started in Italy or Greece. Because humans planted them so much, it is hard to tell.

They are symbols of Rome and line old roads. In the 1700s, people began planting them in new places. You can find them in South Africa and Australia now. They help protect coastal dunes and the soil. However, some pests like the Western conifer seed bug cause trouble. This bug eats the sap and can hurt the seeds.
