The eastern white pine is a huge tree found in eastern North America.

It grows from Newfoundland in Canada down to Georgia in the United States. This tree is very important to many people and animals. The Haudenosaunee people call it the "Tree of Peace." It is a central symbol for their group. Many other groups, like the Wabanaki Confederacy, have their own special names for it.

These trees are often the tallest in the forest. They can grow much higher than many other types of trees.

There is a special way this tree grows and makes new life. Its leaves are actually needles that grow in bundles of five. These needles are a bluish-green color and feel flexible. The tree also grows slender seed cones. Inside these cones are seeds with tiny wings. When the cones open, the wind carries the seeds to new places.

This helps the trees spread across the land. The tree also grows branches that look like the spokes on a wagon wheel.

People have been studying these trees for a long time. In 1605, Captain George Weymouth brought seeds from Maine to England. Because of him, people in the United Kingdom call it the Weymouth pine. Some of these trees are very old. A tree near Syracuse, New York, was 458 years old in the late 1980s. Other trees in Michigan and Wisconsin have lived for about 500 years.

They can even live for more than 400 years.

These trees face many different challenges in nature. One hard job for the tree is fighting white pine blister rust. This is a fungus that can hurt or kill the trees. The fungus needs to live on other plants, like wild currants, to survive. In the past, people removed many currant plants to protect the pine trees. Another problem is the white pine weevil, which is a type of insect.

Even with these problems, the trees are still very important to the forest.

Many animals rely on the white pine for food and a home. Red squirrels love to eat the seeds from the cones. Birds like the red crossbill also eat the seeds. Other animals, like rabbits and porcupines, might even eat the bark.

The tree provides a place for many living things to stay safe. Because they are so big, they act like giant pillars in the forest. This helps the whole forest work together as one big home.
