It is also called yellow spruce or eastern spruce. This tree is very important to the forests where it lives. In Nova Scotia, it is even the provincial tree. You can find these trees in many places like Quebec and Ontario. They grow from the Adirondack Mountains all the way down to North Carolina.

Some trees grow in groups called pure stands. Other times, they live with white pine or balsam fir.

This tree has a very specific way of growing. It has a narrow, cone-shaped top called a crown. The leaves are yellow-green needles that are four-sided and sharp. These needles grow from all sides of the twig. The bark is gray-brown on the outside but red-brown inside.

The tree makes long, red-brown cones that hang down from the branches. These cones have stiff scales and a shiny look. The wood inside is light and soft with a red tinge.

Most red spruce grow at a slow or medium speed.

People have used red spruce for a long time. It is a great choice for making Christmas trees. The wood is also used to make paper pulp. Some people use the wood to make high-quality musical instruments. It is used for the sound boards in violins and acoustic guitars. You can even use the sap to make spruce gum.

Some people boil the twigs with sugar to make spruce beer. It can also be used as lumber for building crates.

In the past, these trees faced many hard jobs. In West Virginia, huge amounts of logging happened in the late 1800s. This caused the number of red spruce to drop to only 10% of what was there before.

Acid rain also became a big problem in the 1980s. Acid rain takes calcium away from the soil. Trees need calcium to stay healthy and handle the cold. Without enough calcium, the trees can struggle or die.

This was a very difficult time for the forests.

Today, many groups are working to help the red spruce return. One group is called the Central Appalachian Spruce Restoration Initiative. They want to bring back the old forests in the mountains. In 1940, a woman named Molly Tartt found a special forest. It was a memorial of 50,000 trees planted by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

This forest was near Devil's Courthouse and had been forgotten. Now, new rules to stop pollution are helping the trees grow again. This shows that helping the air can help the trees too.
